The face is a relatively small area. But it is bonier and less fragile than it looks. You may be surprised to find that you can apply quite deep pressure without discomfort. The aim of face massage is to relieve the stress and tension from the face muscles that are mostly reflected in tightness around the brow, jaw and eyes. And also to circulate blood through the whole area. You don’t need to oil your hands to massage the face, but if the massage is done as part of cosmetic treatment, small amount of massage cream could be applied. Make your movement slow but firm, and keep your awareness in your fingers.
Forehead
Place your thumbs at the centre of the forehead, just above the brows, anchoring your hands on the sides of the head. Moving up a strip at a time, draw your thumbs apart slowly, coming out over the hair and off the sides of the head. Cover the whole forehead in this way, traveling up as far as the hairline.
Eyebrows
Starting at the inner end of the eyebrows, draw your thumbs firmly out to the sides over the hairline and off the head, smoothing the entire brow line. Repeat.
Eyes
Draw your thumbs smoothly and gently over the eyelids, from the inner to the outer corners and off the sides of the head. Repeat.
Nose
Stroke down the bridge of the nose from the top to the tip, using your thumbs alternately. Then squeeze the tip of the nose gently between your thumbs and index fingers.
Cheeks
Beginning just under the inner corners of the eyes, stroke your thumbs across the cheekbone to the hairline above the ear and off the head. Repeat the stroke in strips as you travel gradually down the face; below the cheekbone, above the upper lip and below the lower lip.
Chin
Hold the point of the chin between your thumbs and index fingers and squeeze along the whole chin, using a rhythmical pulling stroke.
Jawbone
Hold the rim of the jawbone at the chin, then draw your hands slowly apart, squeezing right along the jawbone as far as the earlobe.
Chewing Muscles
Locate the chewing muscles on each side of the face. Circle slowly over them with the flats of your fingers.
Cheeks and Ears
Put the heels of your hands on either side of the nose, with your fingers pointing toward the ears. Then, slowly part your hands, gilding them firmly over the cheeks toward the ears. Grasp the ears between your fingers and the heels of your hands and very gentle stretch them away from the head. Then squeeze all around them with your fingers and thumbs.
Neck and Head
Fingers first, begin to slide your hands smoothly down over the face, across the cheeks and under the ears to the back of the neck. Without stopping, pull your hands up the neck and, cupping your hands under the back of the head, draw them toward you, coming slowly off the top of the head and then the hair.
